Carers support for carers who look after palliative patients

Many terminally ill patients wish to spend their final few weeks or months in their own home and home carers enable this to happen. We understand as carers you help provide your loved ones with the best form of care you can. We understand this can be difficult to cope with at times and it is a tough job – it can mean unrelenting pressure, little chance to relax and a lot of worry.

Primrose Surgery aims to help improve end of life care to make sure you and your loved one are as comfortable as possible by managing pain and other distressing symptoms and by providing a holistic approach, providing physical, psychological, social, and spiritual support for your loved one, your family, and you as a carer.

Therefore we can refer carers to a one-to-one service which can help you to access and manage benefits and finances; secure specialist equipment; give support during assessments; and, most importantly, a listening ear and ongoing support for as long as it’s needed.

Anne Smyth, OBE, Director of Carers’ Resource, said: “Looking after someone with a terminal illness or progressive condition where there is no cure, or being faced with end of life as an individual, is a traumatic and extremely difficult time.

“Our link workers will be there to accompany people every step of the way, helping to make sure everyone involved gets the full support they need.

“Each individual case will be unique and part of the link workers’ role will be to work with patients and carers to find the best solutions and services for those in need, while also offering options they may not have considered.

“This joint service means we can offer comprehensive support to patients and their carers, including in-depth benefits work, longer-term support, and be there for the whole journey.”

Lizzie Procter, Hospice Director at Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, added: “Caring for a loved one can be a very challenging role. People can often feel isolated and at times vulnerable and emotionally distressed.

“It is important to have someone they can talk to. Sometimes people are so busy with their role as carers that they simply don’t have the time to look at what services they can access or what is available for them in their area.”

If you would like to be referred to this service please contact the surgery and speak to our carers co-ordinator Carolyn on 01274 729602.
